With the expansion of the power in energy generation and energy distribution light triggered thyristors (LTT) are becoming increasingly important. Very high voltages of several 100 kV cause problems with isolation and electromagnetic interference. This is no longer an issue when connecting the switching point via an optical fiber using a light source delivering the power necessary for switching. For short distances polymer optical fibers (POF) are preferable, since they are much more robust and easier to handle than the glass fibers currently used. The article provides an overview of applications for LTTs and presents first results to switch LTTs with POF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
