| Abstract: |
Alessandria played a pivotal role in the Risorgimento period. In 1861, the tricolor flag flew over the new municipal palace. Its construction was unique: as an alternative to the medieval palatium vetus, the new building was erected on the site of the demolished palatium novum, both of which faced the main square. As early as 1772, the municipality decided to build a new civic theatre with additional rooms for the administration. The project soon outlined the feasibility of constructing the municipal palace in stages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
