Abstract: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic raised important existential questions resulting from the changes in everyday routines and this situation impacted physicians. This study accesses health care professionals' experiences while providing care to COVID-19 patients from March 2020 to March 2021 through a semistructured interview with each of 21 nonrandomized resident physicians. The inductive process to analyze the structure of lived experience was the method used to analyze the data. As result of the interviews, five themes were found to be relevant: (a) the limits of knowledge; (b) the physician's role; (c) interpersonal distancing; (d) the experience of grief; and (e) the importance of care. Then, we concluded that what was presented would be analyzed from the perspective of Heidegger's philosophy. This leads us to a better understanding of medical practice in its ethical, philosophical, and medical educational aspects. This can turn the pandemic into a window of opportunity for the professional development of health care practitioners. Public Significance Statement: This article aims to discuss the importance of taking ethical and humanistic values into account in medical care for patients. The study was based on the assessment of lived experience of medical residents who faced ethical dilemmas when taking care of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) at the main public hospital in Brazil. Although relatively little discussed in scientific literature, medical care concerned with the humanistic aspects of medicine is still absolutely necessary for good clinical practice. Catastrophic events, such as the COVID-19 epidemic, constitute limit situations which evidence it. As the apparatus of medical technique is not sufficient to deal with the situation, the human aspects of the profession become more evident. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
