| Abstract: |
A widening demographic mismatch between enrollment in teacher preparation programs and p-12 student demographics has heightened an imperative that teachers are well prepared as culturally conscious educators able to foster literacy growth in a diverse student body. One avenue through which teacher educators can address this goal is through experiences in which preservice teachers work in racially, ethnically, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse contexts. This paper describes a multimethods study designed to explore the impact of a community engagement experience on preservice elementary teachers enrolled in a foundational literacy course.
