| Abstract: |
The purposes of this lengthy essay are (a) to explain in narrative form how the US became the world's sole superpower; (b) how that achievement is to be understood against the background of modernity; (c) what the logic of modernity encompasses; d) how modernity is perceived as a product of the so-called 'Western' World and why it has provoked a variety of negative reactions; e) what practices and ideas explain the 'West' and its offshoot Anglo-American culture; f) exactly which unique combination of ideas and events propelled the U.S. into this position as opposed even to other Western entities; g) what obstacles the US faces, both internal and external; and h) why this narrative is superior to rival narratives. Despite the ambitious nature of this project, I believe this can be done in a coherent essay while acknowledging and addressing in the notes the myriad questions that such an endeavor provokes.
