| Abstract (English): |
The municipality of Roboré, located in the Chiquitania region of the Santa Cruz Department, Bolivia, contains a high concentration of rock art -over one hundred recorded sites-featuring a wide diversity of motifs associated with distinct styles and traditions spanning several pre-Hispanic periods up to the Colonial period. In 2020, the Sociedad de Investigación del Arte Rupestre de Bolivia (SIARB) launched an archaeological and rock art research project in Roboré, continuing earlier investigations initiated in the 1950s. This article presents the depictions of birds in rock paintings, seeking to identify the species represented and to achieve an approach to the cultural contexts and significance, drawing on Colonial-period sources and recent ethnographic studies from the region. Among these paintings, several anthropomorphic figures with avian traits stand out, and we propose that feathers were used in the headdresses depicted on men as well as in the decoration of objects. Our preliminary findings suggest that birds along with other animals, as well as the relationship of humans with non-human creatures, formed part of a complex Indigenous worldview. | Abstract (Spanish): |
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
