Callous-unemotional (CU) traits in young people are associated with clinically significant behavioural difficulties and a range of negative psychosocial outcomes. These difficulties are considered chronic, enduring and often a prodrome for adult psychopathy, with those high in CU traits processing, understanding and acting on emotions, relative to those low in CU traits. This could explain greater conduct-problem severity. This pilot exploratory study examined data on CU traits, emotion regulation and behavioural difficulties from a largely indigenous sample of New Zealand youth about to begin treatment for severe conduct problems. The degree to which difficulties with emotional awareness and regulation moderated the relationship between CU traits and behavioural difficulties was examined. Young people high in CU traits displayed greater behavioural difficulties, but only if they had low levels of perceived control over their emotions, or low awareness of them. Further investigation into treatment focused on emotional understanding and regulation is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
