Abstract: This article focuses on the life and work of Oskar Stoessel, a Viennese etcher who uniquely created individual portraits of the entire United States Supreme Court during the early 1940s. Supported notably by Chief Justice Harlan Fiske Stone and other justices, Stoessel produced etched portraits of the sitting justices, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt, despite facing challenges as a Jewish refugee seeking artistic employment in America amid prevalent antisemitism. The correspondence reveals Stone’s persistent efforts to help Stoessel secure teaching positions and exhibitions, as well as Stoessel’s struggles with unemployment and his eventual U.S. citizenship in 1944. The article also touches on Stoessel’s personal losses during the Holocaust, his artistic exhibitions, and his later work with subsequent chief justices, illustrating the intersection of art, law, and refugee experience during a turbulent historical period.
