Purpose: Increasing concerns about the widespread availability of sweeteners in the food supply underscore the need for studies assessing their prevalence. This study examined the disclosure of sweeteners on the labels of packaged foods and beverages available in the Uruguayan market, with a focus on both non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) and polyols. Design/methodology/approach: Using a database of 7,183 packaged foods and beverages, sweetener disclosure was assessed across different food categories. The presence of sugar or calorie reduction claims was also analyzed. Findings: The findings revealed that at least one sweetener was disclosed on 12.1% of the labels, with NSS and polyols disclosed on 8.6 and 6.3% of the labels, respectively. Sweetener disclosure was particularly high in certain categories, including non-alcoholic beverages, sweet spreads and desserts, with limited availability of sweetener-free alternatives in some subcategories. Only 4.9% of the products disclosing sweeteners included a front-of-package claim about them. In addition, many products not including sugar or calorie reduction claims on the front of the pack disclosed sweeteners in the ingredient list, potentially leading to hidden sweetener consumption. Originality/value: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the prevalence of sweetener disclosure and labeling information related to sweeteners in an emerging Latin American country. The findings highlight the widespread availability of sweeteners and underscore the need for clearer labeling regulations to enable consumers to make quick and informed decisions regarding their sweetener consumption.
