Abstract: The literacy-learning difficulties of persons who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems are well documented (1, 2). The field of AAC has only begun to ask the question, ‘How can the literacy difficulties of AAC users be remediated?’ This presentation will describe the methods and outcomes for year one of Project LITERAAC: Literacy Interventions to Enhance Reading and Writing through Augmentative and Alternative Communication. This project is the first federally funded study in the U.S. looking at how AAC systems can be used to develop literacy skills in students with severe communication and physical impairments.
