| Abstract: |
An essay is presented on the liberal idea of tolerance and religious vilification laws. The author argues that reliance on hate laws stems from confusion about toleration, particularly the failure to distinguish between toleration and tolerance. He examines the liberal tradition which has historically focused on the problem in terms of state toleration. He discusses ways of underpinning both tolerance and toleration at the level of the individual and community. |
