| Abstract: |
The article discusses the notion of leveling in performance art in the 20th century and the origin of modern performance art from anti-elitist theories in the conceptual art movement. The author discusses art criticism by art theorist Murray Krieger and the work of performance artist Marina Abramovic. Several works of performance art by Abramovic are discussed including "Art Must Be Beautiful, Artist Must Be Beautiful," "Rhythm 0," and "Lips of Thomas." The author argues that, despite its origin, performance art has, in her opinion, given in to the culture of art museums and has become an elitist form of art. |
