Abstract: Internal migration data for the United States are available from the decennial census, the Current Population Survey, the annual population estimation program, Internal Revenue Service income tax records, and Social Security records. This paper discusses the characteristics, uses, and limitations of each data series. The characteristics considered include geographic and demographic detail, sample size and population coverage, timeliness and reliability, and the length of the migration period. Appropriate data sources are recommended for various uses, including forecasting, modeling, and descriptive studies. Strong reservations are expressed about the accuracy of migration data from the Continuous Work History Sample of the Social Security records and from the population estimation program. The most serious deficiencies of U.S. migration data as a whole are (1) the lack of an acceptable time series of migration data and (2) the paucity of data with sufficient geographic and demographic detail between census years. Suggestions are offered to improve this situation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
