The article focuses on the contribution of the 16th century-Anabaptist heretics to the first-amendment of freedom of speech and freedom of religion. It relates the case of Socrates who questioned the religious beliefs of Athenians. It explores the claims of church historian Walter KÖhler regarding the freedom of faith and conscience. The article also discusses the protest movement of Anabaptist within the political systems of Switzerland, Germany, and Holland, and the views of several Anabaptists on the freedom including Leonhard Schoener, John Claess, and Menno Simons. |
