The investigation reported in this monograph represents an attempt to establish the abilities, attitudes, and activities which go toward making an effective industrial scientist and to determine how and to what extent these factors should influence the design of undergraduate courses and the various aspects of career guidance. The views of nearly 1,400 British scientists were assessed and results presented that show the level of usefulness of various subjects and techniques to these scientists, and the extent to which they received instruction in these topics during their undergraduate training. Opinions concerning the desirable attitudes of an industrial scientist and the particular attributes that scientists occupying various specific positions should possess are also recorded. The results of the enquiry show that the practicing industrial scientist believes that much can be done to improve course design, not only to enhance the technical competence of the student, but also to make a career in industry a more attractive and worthwhile proposition.
