Abstract: Aimed at providing a broader understanding and appreciation of the mission and contributions of personnel management, the first volume of the seven volume handbook is authored by experts from industry, the public service, and the academic community. It is intended for both practitioners and students preparing for careers in personnel and industrial relations. The initial chapter, by Lewis E. Albright, of Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation, discusses basic planning considerations under the heading of Staffing Policies and Strategies. This is followed by a chapter entitled Job Information: Its Development and Applications, by Ernest J. McCormick, of Purdue University. Paul Wernimont, of 3M Co., then takes up Recruitment Policies and Practices, followed by a chapter on Selection, Interviewing, and Testing, by C. Harold Stone and Floyd Ruch. Appraisals of 'People' Resources is the title of the chapter by Thomas J. Baylie, Carl J. Kujawski, and Drew M. Young, of Atlantic Richfield. The chapter on Internal Personnel Maintenance, dealing with personnel transactions after hiring, is authored by Richard Conner, of Control Data Corporation, and Robert Fjerstad, of Northern States Power Company. The final chapter is entitled Equal Employment Opportunities, by Howard C. Lockwood, of Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. (MW)
