Abstract: Neighborhood North, a play-oriented community museum in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, had just opened when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and schools closed. The museum's mission is to increase educational equity in the community. Neighborhood North leaders immediately saw a need to support students at risk of falling behind in school with academic learning and social and emotional development and support families by providing childcare. Administrators collaborated with the local school district and a local faith-based organization that provided summer and out-of-school-time programming to organize two learning pods for children in grades K-5. Although this approach enabled rapid and low-cost start up in a crisis and benefitted to students, limited support and training for staff created challenges and may have limited the academic impact. This brief describes Neighborhood North's experience and the importance of community-based organizations (CBOs) in crisis response.
