| Abstract: |
This report examines the implementation of Summer 305, an enhanced summer program which operated from June 14 through August 5 during the summer of 2021 at 179 sites in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). Eighteen program offerings were provided in a variety of physical and virtual delivery modes. Summer 305 was comprised of a suite of services designed to mitigate learning loss and achievement gaps, address the social and emotional needs of students, and accelerate the start of learning recovery that resulted from the shutdown of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Enrolled students participated in a complement of programs that included supplemental reading instruction, course recovery (courses designed to facilitate promotion), and/or courses needed for graduation. Preliminary results of the program (which did not include controlled comparisons to non-participants) were mixed, with significant gains seen in English Language Arts for students in Grades 1-3, gains in Grade 3 in Mathematics, but declines in other grades. Thus, the Summer 305 program successfully engaged large numbers of M-DCPS students in face-to-face learning following school closures and large-scale enrollment in remote learning activities due to the COVID-19 public health emergency. |
