Abstract: This article offers implementation tips for early childhood educators who wish to provide supplemental, small-group, emergent literacy instruction to preschool children in the early childhood classroom. Authors illustrate the value of small-group instruction for children in advance of kindergarten and provide suggestions for how teachers may overcome many challenges often experienced with its delivery. Tips were inspired by teacher feedback, following their implementation of a small-group, early literacy program for the first time, as a part of their participation in a large-scale research study conducted by the authors. Lessons learned from the experience are included here, centering on how to overcome classroom staffing and time management challenges in addition to how to engage preschool children in small-group activities.
