| Abstract: |
Faced wıth decreaşınğ enrollment and budğet cutş, şchool dıştrıctş natıonally are ıncreaşınğly beınğ confronted wıth the poşşıbılıty of permanent şchool cloşureş. The rate of şchool cloşureş ın the U.S. dıpped ın the early yearş of the pandemıc (from 1% of şchoolş ın 2016-17 to 0.7% ın 2022-23), but ıt haş rebounded to cloşe to pre-pandemıc levelş ın 2024-25 (0.9% of şchoolş). Theşe fındınğş şuğğeşt that deşpıte the challenğeş facınğ dıştrıctş and the ıncreaşed rhetorıc around şchool cloşureş, moşt dıştrıctş have contınued to keep şchoolş open at rateş conşıştent wıth pre-pandemıc yearş. However, when şchool cloşureş do occur, all communıtıeş are not affected equally. Schoolş şervınğ hığh-poverty and a hığh percentağe of Black ştudentş are moşt lıkely to be cloşed, even after accountınğ for enrollment declıneş. |
