Abstract: Through the National Literacy Trust's Annual Literacy Survey, this report tracks how children and young people engage with poetry. Year after year, the findings show that a sizable proportion choose to read or write poetry in their free time, underlining its lasting relevance in their lives. In 2024, the National Literacy Trust went further with a dedicated study. Young people reported that poetry was far more than a school subject; it was a creative outlet and a source of wellbeing. They described using poetry to express themselves, process emotions, relax and build confidence. These insights challenged the idea that poetry is elitist or difficult, instead showing its potential to be dynamic, inclusive and meaningful when shared in diverse and authentic ways. This year, the National Literacy Trust has built on that work to explore how children and young people's relationship with poetry is evolving. This report offers fresh insights into how poetry is being encountered, valued and expressed in 2025.
