| Abstract: |
The purpose of this study was to investigate the required music performance assessment (MPA) repertoire lists performed by high school and middle school choral and band programs in the state of North Carolina. The authors analyzed the number of pieces, composers, and ethnic and gender representations on the state MPA band and choral lists. In particular, the researchers focused on the diversity of composers in terms of gender and BiPoC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) identities. The study found a disproportionate representation of White and male composers on both the choral and wind band repertoire lists. Implications for state music education associations are discussed, particularly regarding the evaluation of the purpose, goals, and desired outcomes of the repertoire selected and performed at MPA events across North Carolina. |
