| Abstract: |
Purpose: This study aimed to examine the role of motivation and sociodemographic profiles of the students in acquisition of English language as a second language. Methodology: In the current study 200 students participated including 100 male and 100 female students. The data was collected from both public and private institutions of Azad Jammu Kashmir (AJK) Pakistan. Furthermore, the demographic characteristics of the students and Attitude/Motivation/Anxiety Test Battery (AMATB) were employed to assess the association between motivation and English language acquisition. Findings: The results of the current study revealed that female students showed a more positive attitude towards English language acquisition as a second language, while, male students reported higher levels of anxiety and motivation towards learning English language. Additionally, students from joint family systems showed significantly high level of anxiety towards English language learning. In contrast students from nuclear family systems demonstrate significantly high level of attitude and motivation to learn English as a second language. Furthermore, a significant association was also found between motivation and language acquisition among students of middle and upper socioeconomic classes, with these groups showing higher levels of attitude and motivation. However, no significant association was found with respect to students' age or educational level. Conclusion: The current study examines the student's motivation and their demographic characteristics in the learning of English as second language particular in the area of Azad Jammu Kashmir, Pakistan. The results of the study highlighted the distinct differences in attitude, motivation, and anxiety towards English language acquisition across various sociodemographic groups. |
