| Abstract: |
English language learners from around the world are an integral part of U.S. higher education. With current cuts to DEI services at colleges and universities, communication centers are positioned to serve the broader campus community as well as play an important role in embracing marginalized students by utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) which celebrates students' unique contributions. CRP uses students' cultures as a starting point to promote student learning, cultural competence, and critical awareness (Ladson-Billings, 2021). This paper encourages communication centers to embrace CRP and provides suggestions for improving student learning, cultural competence, and critical awareness in communication centers. By utilizing the CRP framework, communication centers can serve the greater campus community and endeavor to meet the needs of English language learners and other marginalized groups in higher education. |
