Objective: The aim of this study was to conduct a situational analysis of research and to develop a strategic plan to improve the research ecosystem of a Peruvian medical school. Methods: A Strengths, Opportunities, Weaknesses, and Threats (SWOT) analysis of the faculty’s research management was carried out through regular meetings with individuals who had participated in research activities over recent years. Additional analyses were performed, including political, economic, social, and technological (PEST) assessments, a value chain analysis of research processes within the medical school, a bibliometric analysis of its scientific output, and a Correct, Address, Maintain, and Exploit (CAME) analysis. Results: A proposal was developed consisting of six strategic objectives: (1) to facilitate the development of proposals and access to funding; (2) to improve compliance with research regulations; (3) to strengthen research project management; (4) to increase basic research resources; (5) to enhance research capacities and training; and (6) to promote knowledge translation. Conclusion: This paper presents the experience of developing an institutional strategic plan focused on strengthening research within the medical school of a Peruvian public university. ; Objetivo: El objetivo del presente trabajo fue hacer un análisis situacional de la investigación y elaborar un plan estratégico para mejorar el ecosistema de investigación de una facultad de medicina peruana. Metodología: Se realizó un análisis de Fortalezas, Oportunidades, Debilidades y Amenazas (FODA) de la gestión de la investigación de la facultad a través de reuniones periódicas con quienes formaron parte de actividades de investigación de la facultad en los últimos años.
