International audience ; Background. Prenatal exposure to certain legacy insecticides had an impact on the child neurodevelopment. Less is known for insecticides currently used in household products or for vector control, especially in tropical areas and epidemic contexts. The aim was to investigate the longitudinal association between prenatal insecticide exposure and infant development, and taking into account the joint exposure to Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy.Methods. A follow-up of pregnant women was conducted in Guadeloupe during the 2016 ZIKV epidemic. Maternal or cord blood samples were used to assess maternal infection during pregnancy (ZIKV+/-). Maternal hair samples at delivery were used to measure concentrations of organophosphate, pyrethroid, carbamate, neonicotinoid and few other molecules (fipronil metabolites and piperonyl butoxide PBO). At 18 months of age, general development was assessed using the ASQ (Age and Stage Questionnaire) and behaviours with ELDEQ (Etude Longitudinale du Développement des Enfants au Québec) questionnaires (n = 246) completed by the mothers. Regression models (linear or spline) accounting for confounding factors were performed.Results. The maternal hair-concentration of TCPy (trichloro-pyridinol), metabolite of chlorpyrifos, was associated with a decrease in total ASQ score (beta = -7.8, 95%CI [-12.7; -3.0]) in 18-month-olds. This association was not modified by ZIKV infection. Fipronil sulfone was associated with decreased total ASQ score, only among ZIKV+. An association between PBO hair-concentrations and increased oppositional behaviour was observed (non-linear relationship, p-value = 0.01), particularly among ZIKV-. For other molecules, no association was observed.Conclusion. We observed only few effect-heterogeneities between insecticide exposure and ZIKV infection during pregnancy on infant development. No biological mechanism for the possible joint effect of fipronil andZIKV infection during pregnancy is known. The study confirms the ... |
