This study captures the landscape of Knowledge Networks (KNs) supporting Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) in Europe. KNs can facilitate collaboration and knowledge-sharing amongst its members, which is critical for addressing the complex, multilevel challenges posed by climate change. The study employs systematic grey literature methods and identifies a total of 46 platforms, 32 of which are qualified as KNs and forms the core of the analysis presented, and 14 are information-focused Knowledge Hubs (KHs). The deliverable analyzes their geographic distribution, composition and activities.KNs are primarily composed of local authorities (85%), with some including for-profit, non-profit, or research entities. Most are headquartered in Belgium, Germany, and France, but membership in this type of KNs is higher in Italy and Spain. Criteria and threshold to become a KN member vary, ranging from low-access networks like the Covenant of Mayors to higher-access ones like C40, which requires members to demonstrate climate leadership.Key activities include the exchange of good practices, policy advocacy, and financial capacity-building. KNs help members secure funding, form consortia, and, in some cases, directly fund projects. Peer learning is a common feature, supported through conferences, thematic groups, and digital platforms. Some KNs provide symbolic capital, enhancing members' reputations via awards and visibility initiatives. The study highlights the critical role of KNs in enabling climate adaptation but suggests room for improvement. Enhanced monitoring, greater inclusivity, and targeted support could help KNs address the unique, localized needs of their members, strengthening their overall impact on adaptation governance. Limitations of our study include reliance on English-language sources and limited feedback from KN members. Despite this, the findings provide valuable insights into the evolving landscape of climate-focused networks in Europe and how these play a critical role in supporting their members ... |
