| Description: |
Motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) are one of the leading causes of death among U.S. children and adolescents. Black children and those in rural areas have higher mortality rates compared to White and urban peers. Despite ongoing prevention efforts, the reasons for these disparities are still unclear. This project is a collaboration between the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Children’s Hospital of Alabama (COA). This is a retrospective cohort study examining MVC-involved patients under 19 years old who received care at either institution between 2018 and 2025. The study examines differences in diagnosis, treatment, and discharge practices in rural and urban settings to find patterns of inequity in child passenger safety. Contributions included designing and improving a REDCap database, creating a documentation manual, extracting patient data from Epic, and preparing datasets for analysis. The findings will help develop strategies to reduce disparities in injury outcomes and improve equity in child passenger safety. ; This project was supported by the Penn Undergraduate Research Mentoring (PURM) program. |
