| Description: |
This chapter describes clause chaining and related structures in the Macro-Tani group of Trans-Himalayan (= Sino-Tibetan) languages, focusing on the Tani languages Galo and Adi on the one hand, and the more genetically distant Milang on the other. Adopting synchronic and diachronic perspectives, it discusses morphological markers of clause chains, outlines the basic syntactic features of Macro-Tani clause chains in two types of ‘non-final’ construction, and describes Macro-Tani clause chains in desubordinated, quotative and imperative constructions. By analysing Macro-Tani clause chains in the broader context of its dependent clause typology, this chapter provides evidence for the structural distinctness of non-final constructions in Macro-Tani, which are broadly consistent with the ‘co-subordinate’ type. It therefore cautions against claims made in the literature that ‘Asian converbs’ tend to conflate most if not all coordinating and subordinating functions into a single structural type; in Macro-Tani languages, at least, this is clearly not the case. |
