Description: Globalization has accelerated the presence of global, multinational organizations (MNOs) operating across cultural borders and diverse cultures. Alongside the advantages of integrating multiple operations and functions in different countries, global leaders in MNOs face challenges in effectively bridging the global workforce’s different cultures, languages, experiences, and mindsets. Such complex work environments have prompted researchers to turn their attention to leaders’ identity as a powerful force underlying leadership. However, there are still some unresolved questions concerning leadership in complex, diverse, multiple-identity settings. This chapter addresses this matter by examining leaders’ cultural identities in two distinct cultural contexts: expatriates posted outside their home country to manage employees in the host country, and leaders of multicultural teams. Building on social identity and acculturation theories, the authors portray the relationship between leaders’ cultural identity strategies, effective leadership behaviors, and their impact on followers’ identities and behaviors in both contexts.
