Description: The effects of liquid state on secondary injection in a supersonic stream were experimentally investigated. Normal penetration and lateral spreading of the liquid jets were inferred from scattered-light and schlieren photographs. A scaling law for lateral spreading of a cold-water jet, including Mach number dependence, was determined, and the data on normal penetration were used to extend existing correlations to lower injection pressure ratios. The effect of vapor pressure on breakup of liquid jets was investigated by injecting superheated water and acetone. A nondimensional penetration height was correlated with injector pressure ratio for superheated liquid injection, and the importance of thermodynamic properties on normal penetration was examined in view of these results.
