The beauty of a smile is not solely defined by the teeth’s shape, position and colour, but also by the condition of the gingival tissues. While melanin pigmentation of the gingiva poses no medical risk, complaints about ‘black gums’ are common, particularly amongst individuals with a high smile line. Consequently, treatment approaches in periodontal aesthetics aim to establish a harmonious balance between the pink hues of the gums and the white of the teeth, a crucial aspect of all dental procedures. Various methods for gingival depigmentation have been documented, including bur abrasion, scraping, partial thickness flap surgery, cryotherapy, electrosurgery and laser treatment. In this case report, scraping, electrosurgery and diode laser techniques were employed for depigmentation, chosen for their simplicity, effectiveness and ability to deliver satisfactory results, thereby ensuring patient contentment. |
