| Description: |
Although the association between adverse childhood experiences and the onset of mental health problems has robustly been documented, little is known about their contribution to the persistence of difficulties that do not fall under mental disorders such as functional impairment and suicidal behaviors. Furthermore, while early stressors typically refer to adverse childhood experiences within a family-related context, there is a need to investigate other potential early stressors that are central in young people’s everyday life, namely (cyber)bullying victimization for which the use of social networks sites is a possible context of onset that need further scientific interest. The current thesis thus aims to examine the association of adverse childhood experiences with the persistence of severe role impairment (study 1) and suicidal behaviors (study 2) in early adulthood by conjointly studying typical operationalizations (types and number of types) and a cumulative frequency of exposure; to study whether (cyber)bullying victimization occurring prior to age 18 continue to contribute to the risk of being victimized at entry to college (study 3); to determine how social network sites use are measured in the literature (study 4); and whether such use is associated with negative body image among adolescents (study 5). Data used in studies 1 to 3 were drawn from an online survey designed to characterize mental health needs among first-year college students and conducted in two universities as part of the French portion of the World Mental Health International College Student initiative. From the 2017-2018 to the 2020-2021 academic years, all incoming students received an e-mail inviting them to take part in the baseline survey. The survey included questions about sociodemographic characteristics, mental health, exposure to childhood adversities (i.e. parental psychopathology, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, serious neglect) and bullying victimization. Participants who responded at baseline, were invited to ... |
