| Description: |
This presentation offers an overview of where so-called “Brexit” developments have taken us as we mark a decade since the United Kingdom’s Referendum vote to leave the European Union (EU). The introductory part serves as a reminder of the context in which the United Kingdom acceded to the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1973 and the on-going tensions which characterised the relationship between the United Kingdom and (what has now become) the EU during the next four decades. This is followed by a brief resumé of the technical (legal) steps taken to bring about formal withdrawal up until the date of exit in 2020. The last part considers some of the consequences for United Kingdom employment law in the wake of full formal withdrawal and against the backdrop of global industrial disruption brought about through COVID-19, war in the Ukraine, and fundamental shifts in approaches to economic relations stimulated by the commencement of a second term in office of the 47th President of the United States of America. |
