| Description: | Review title: Accuracy of the fecal leukocyte test for diagnosing acute bacterial diarrhea or gastroenteritis: a systematic review Review question: Which is the diagnostic accuracy of the fecal leukocyte test for patients with acute bacterial diarrhea or gastroenteritis? Context: Fecal leukocyte testing is a diagnostic tool used to identify invasive gastroenteritis and guide decisions on antibiotic initiation. There is considerable heterogeneity in the sensitivity and specificity of fecal leukocyte microscopy across high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries. However, fecal leukocytes, combined with other symptoms such as fever, may indicate bacterial gastroenteritis and support antibiotic treatment. Fecal leukocyte testing remains valuable due to its rapid processing and widespread availability in low- and middle-income countries. |
