Description: What does it mean for a national cultural institution to embed itself within the civic and cultural infrastructure of Greater Manchester? How might opera be reimagined through the lens of local narratives, musical traditions and community priorities? How might decentralisation reshape the operational model of a national arts organisation? Tuning into Opera, a collaborative research project between English National Opera and The University of Manchester, sets out to explore these questions as English National Opera prepares to move to Greater Manchester by 2029. Employing a mixed-method, co-creative approach, the 18-month borough-wide study integrates stakeholder mapping, archival analysis, interviews, participatory workshops and a series of public surveys. The research is structured around four key areas of inquiry: (1) perceptions and histories of opera in Greater Manchester; (2) opera’s potential role in placemaking and local storytelling; (3) inclusion and accessibility within the context of both audiences and opera-makers; and (4) innovation and technology. The presentation will share the project’s initial findings, contributing to critical conversations on the evolving role of cultural institutions as they relocate and on the value of mutually productive modes of engaging with a wide range of stakeholder groups in the institution’s future home.
