Anatomy since the beginning of the evolution of medical science was considered by Hippocrates to be the most important specialty of medical education. Although religious and ethical reasons had been restricting the anatomists for centuries, however, through surgical and comparative anatomy, knowledge was recorded by many authors of antiquity. The ancient schools of Egypt, China, India and Greece were the ones that pushed medicine through philosophy, to evolve into a human art. Alcmaeus, Hippocrates, Herofilus, Erasistratus founded anatomy in ancient Greece, accepting influences from the other schools of antiquity. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, many artists such as Leonardo da Vinci got involved with it through their anatomical depictions. Schools and university centers throughout Europe, mainly in the Italian peninsula, shaped the conditions for the development of anatomical art in its modern scientific form. Konstantinos Afrikanos, Guy de Chauliac, Henri de Mondeville, Gabriel Fallopius, Hieronymus Fabricius ab Aquapendente, Andreas Vesalius, Guglielmo Saliceti, Jacques Dubois, Ambroise Paré, Andrea Cesalpino and Thomas Willis are some of the great personalities of anatomy that are being studied within the dissertation.
