The purpose of this lecture is to give an insight into the role played by fighter escort on strategic bombing r.ri.s-· sions. It should be pointed out·, at the ou,tset, that strategic mission~; as opposed to tactical work ec. ~ssi tate long flights deep into c:merny_. territory. b~ There are two types of escort employed. The first we call static. By this we mean one particular group of fighters escort~ the bombers throughout the entire r:dssion. A typical rela es ort ~ission so carried out by the 15th Air Force in Italy will be used later in the discussion as an illustration. 2. OPETIATIONAL CONTROL. a. He are first concerned with the op-erational control of our fighto~s. ·There arc two ~ethods in use today by our Air.Force. One method is ·to have a Fighter Co.mm.and separate and 1 distinct from the Bomber Command and Air .Force. The other is having tho Fighters .directly .under Bomber· Wings. This latter has been in prac­tice in Itazy tlff until two months ago, at which time a separate Fighter Viing, tho· 306th,; ""was formed. This i-:ing operates .directly under the 15th Air Force. b. It may be added that the number of aircraft in a thcil.t0r, bombers and fighters, will help decide the naod for higher echelons. 3. PURPOSE .OF ESCORT. a. Tho primary purpose of fighter escort is to provide the bombers maximum protection against attack by hostile aircraft. Bearing always in mind that the success of a bombing missiop depends upon an unmolc·sted bomb run, wo can readily sec that fighter escort is indispcnsible. TI1c cnony will do literally ...; 1939-1945
