| Description: |
Acute necrotizing encephalopathy (ANE) is a rare disease, characterized by the rapid development of multiple, symmetrical brain lesions, affecting the thalamus bilaterally, the brainstem tegmentum and the cerebellar medulla. The clinical picture consists of a rapidly deteriorating encephalopathy which develops 1 to 3 days after a prodromal febrile illness. ANE has been related to influenza A virus infection, but to date it has also been associated with other viruses and mycoplasma. We report a case of ANE, characterized by a combination of unusual features. |
