International audience ; Most of targets for 99Mo production are manufactured by the picture-frame method and contain a mixture of uranium aluminides dispersed in an Al matrix. The starting aluminide is often UAl2. During the manufacturing process, interdiffusion phenomena between UAl2 and Al lead to the formation of UAl3 and/or UAl4 phases. Heat treatments of several hours at ~ 800-850 K are required to minimize the fraction of UAl2 in the final product, in order to meet dissolution specifications of the targets. In this study, UAl2 + Al powder mixtures were compacted by a spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. Two temperatures (825 and 850 K) and different sintering times (from 0 to 15 min) were investigated. The progress of the interaction reactions was monitored by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled to energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Only a few minutes are sufficient to convert the UAl2 phase into a UAl3 + UAl4 mixture. |
