Chapter 4 considers some of the New Deal’s most critical public works projects in Puerto Rico such as the construction of hurricane-proof houses, schools, roads, hospitals, health clinics, sanitation systems, water delivery infrastructure, recreation facilities, agricultural and craft industry cooperatives, and rural rehabilitation centers. By examining how cement from Cataño was used to build a modern public health infrastructure, this chapter shows how Puerto Rican engineers and planners working for the PRRA sought to make long-range interventions into daily life for residents in both urban and agrarian areas of the island. |
