International audience ; In the framework of the safety analysis of package designs, it must be demonstrated that the compression of the gaskets is sufficient to maintain the sealing of the containment system under all conditions of transport. In many cases, the compression calculations consider a compression set value for elastomer gaskets based on the manufacturer's data sheets. Such values are obtained for conditions that are not representative of those encountered in the regulatory normal conditions of transport. Previous experimental tests measurements, carried out by IRSN (now ASNR) and presented at PATRAM 2022, showed compression set values significantly higher than those given in the manufacturer's data sheets for temperatures and durations representative of normal conditions of transport. Since 2023, IRSN has been carrying out experimental tests to characterize the effects of the compression set on the sealing performance of packages during thermal ageing. As previously, the O-ring gaskets were tested in mockups equipped with groove dimensions representative of French package designs. A test device, developed and qualified for temperatures from -40°C to 140°C, was then used to measure the evolution of the sealing of three grades of elastomer gaskets used in France, through three types of thermal cycling for temperatures ranging from -40°C to 140°C, over periods of approximately three months, simulating operating conditions of packages. This article presents the results of these experimental tests, highlighting the evolution of leakage rate measurements combined with compression set measurements over the three cycles. |
