Description: PURPOSES: Using the Therapy-Related Symptom Checklist- Children (TRSC-C), (a) examined symptom occurrence and severity during neuro-oncology treatments of children/adolescents; (b) compared the symptom occurrence and severity scores of pediatric neuro-oncology patients 5-11 years old, and those 12-17 years old; and (c) males vs. females. Used Orem's self-care deficit theory. METHODS: Secondary analysis from a cross-sectional study at 5 university-affiliated Children's Hospitals/clinics in the USA; data were reported on 79 pediatric outpatient neuro-oncology patients receiving chemotherapy, some on radiation or both (51% male; age range: 5-16 yrs; mean age 10.12 years; SD, 3.26). The 30-item, standardized TRSC-C was used to record patients' symptom occurrence and severity (0, no symptom; 1, “A little bit”; 2, “Quite a bit”; 3, “A lot”; 4, “A whole lot”) during cancer treatments. High reliability and good content and construct validity have been established. To address the study purposes, descriptive data analyses were done. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha was.92. [A] Symptom occurrence: symptoms reported by 40% or more of the Ss were: taste change, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, feeling sluggish, difficulty concentrating, difficulty sleeping, hair loss, dizziness, skin changes, pain, constipation, and irritable– with mean severity scores all above 1 [range: 1.1-1.7, or between “a little bit” to “quite a bit”]. Only 3 symptoms added by a few were different [e.g., blurred vision, weak reflexes, loss of hearing]; also mentioned were difficulty walking/balance, and mood swings, but these were similar to the TRSC-C items “tripping/ falling” and “irritable”. [B]. The older age group had significantly higher TRSC-C total scores (M = 18.92, SD = 14.52 vs 27.35, SD = 19.80), t = -2.12, p < .05. [C] TRSC-C total scores of males and females were not significantly different. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS: Treating central nervous system tumors, second most common childhood cancer, requires aggressive multi-modal therapies ...
