Description: Research on genetic resistance to bacterial blight has been amazingly successful in identifying genes providing protection to rice plants. Despite this, few genes have found widespread or mainstream application in breeding programs, with the result that most resistance genes are still absent or at very low frequencies in elite material worldwide. This creates both difficulties and opportunities in designing resistance strategies for rice breeding. The lack of availability of particular genes such as xa13, Xa23, xa25 and xa41 in elite material makes their application difficult, but at the same time means the pathogen has not been exposed to large-scale selection for resistance. Efforts are being made to make key genes available for easy use in mainstream breeding programs, and some new resources will be highlighted. However care must be taken to design resistance strategies to promote long-term effectiveness of these resistance genes.
