Purpose This study aims to analyze bankers’ preparedness to adopt the metaverse in emerging economies under the Industrial Revolution (IR) 5.0 via the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model examination. Design/methodology/approach In constructing its framework by using the UTAUT model for examining bankers’ readiness to adopt the metaverse, this study has collected 334 responses from the employees of the top five Indian banks. The research findings were validated using structural equation modeling. Findings The findings revealed that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and facilitating conditions are significantly related to the bank employees’ intention to use technology. The moderating role of self-efficacy highlighted a significant role in strengthening the employees’ intention to adopt new technology. Practical implications The findings of this study provide comprehensive insights for banks, financial institutions and policymakers to enhance metaverse technology adoption. Through focused training, sound infrastructural support and incentives, organizations can align with determinants of adoption such as performance expectancy, effort expectancy and social influence. These findings support policies that empower employees with the skills and confidence to adopt metaverse technologies in digital banking. Originality/value This study explores and contributes to metaverse adoption literature in the South Asian region while using a novel approach to analyzing the bankers’ perceptions using the UTAUT model. This report adds to the discussion on metaverse future in banking institutions. |
