Black postgraduate students in the UK are exposed to institutional and interpersonal racism that may impact their mental wellbeing and educational experiences. Minimal research exists to understand how racism and other stressful life experiences shape postgraduate students’ mental health and wellbeing as they progress through education, which this study aimed to achieve. Biographical Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM) interviews (n = 12) were completed with Black UK postgraduate students. Two main themes were derived from Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA): (i) Cumulative stressful life experiences and (ii) Culture of racism in higher education. The current study reveals how Black UK postgraduate students might experience racial trauma symptoms after repeated exposure to interacting stressors, specifically stressful life events, harmful cultural expectations in education, and racist behaviours in university spaces which are shaped and maintained by institutional racism. The article offers recommendations for educators and psychologists to address racism and racial trauma in university. |
