| Description: |
Climate adaptation is what we (will) make of it, that is, either a burden or an opportunity for a brighter and equitable future. Achieving effective adaptation requires shifting from a risk-centric perspective focusing on the threats, to a more inclusive and engaging approach that envisions sustainable futures. This Perspective draws on our decades of research experience to argue that the “habitability” lens can catalyse this shift, and proposes a research framework. ; The authors received funding support from The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Ocean Acidification International Coordination Centre of the International Atomic Energy Agency (“Atolls Futures” group; A.K.M., V.K.E.D., J.D.B., S.D.D., C.P., T.S.S., C.C.C.W., I.W.), the French National Research Agency (FUTURISKS project, grant ANR-22-POCE-0002; V.K.E.D., A.K.M.), the French University Institute/Institut Universitaire de France (Senior Innovation Chair; V.K.E.D.), the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (grant WAC 2022 128; I.W.; and WAC-2022–128; P.D.N .; and the “ Transforming Food systems” project; J.B., A.M.) , the Minderoo Foundation (J.D.B.), the UKRI (NERC Grant NE/NO015878/1; T.S .; and NE/X003868/1; J.D.F.; and NERC grant NE/T004517/1; P.D.N .), the European Research Council (Advanced Grant EP/Z533385/1; J.D.F. ); and the Pacific Fund/Fonds Pacifique (FenuAdapt project; A.K.M.). The authors also thanks Tim Linsell (University of British Columbia, Canada) for comments on an earlier version of the manuscript. ; Peer-reviewed |
