Description: International audience ; BRDF is a fundamental function that describes the optical response of a surface to an incident light signal and allows to predict the luminance field captured by a human observer. Although presented as an angular function, it also depends on many other variables. Its precise definition indicates that it is not directly measurable, it can only be approximated by integrating these variables over ranges of varying widths. Among the variables, some are not found in optical models, reason why they are often omitted. This is the case for the elementary areas and the solid angles defining the geometrical extents of the light beams: mathematical formalisms model light rays as straight lines striking the surface at a dimensionless point. In physical systems, however, these parameters determine the measurement resolution. This article examines the importance of considering these hidden variables and estimating the values that should be assigned to them to describe appearance in accordance with visual acuity as a function of the viewing distance.
