| Description: | The following paper discusses the development and results to date of New South Wales latest prime lamb alliance. The Crystal Spring branded lamb alliance, established in August 2003, differs from many previous producer based alliances due to the program being initiated from a retail/wholesale base. The program has been a phenomenal success with producers receiving 53c/kg more ($11.40) than saleyard carcase returns and comprehensive slaughter (percentages in specification, health issues etc) feedback. Retail consumer feedback has been positive although subjectively based. Despite recent difficulties faced by all parties the Crystal Spring branded lamb alliance continues to operate. AIMS In simple terms an alliance is an agreement between two parties to achieve common objectives. Price is not the only driver of the relationship, instead consumer requirements come first and the alliance works towards meeting their needs (Thatcher 1995). In addition product differentiation has been identified as being instrumental in achieving success in the market place (Carson 1995). The use of strategic alliances by the red meat industry can improve the competitiveness of participants |
