| Description: |
This short film presents an experiment conceived by Dominique Dragacci-Libbra, then a doctoral student in musicology at Aix-Marseille University, within the PRISM Laboratory research unit (UMR 7061-CNRS/AMU), where she conducted research on choral practice under the supervision of Vincent Tiffon, a university professor. She focused particularly on the level of rapport between the conductor and the choir in the effectiveness of choral conducting. Her main hypothesis was that a high level of rapport is necessary for a conductor to achieve optimal sound from a choir. To test this, she brought together a choir and four different conductors, including its principal conductor. This was followed by an artistic experiment and then an experimental protocol involving a practical phase with an experienced choir, its principal conductor, and three other professional conductors, all of whom were choir directors in opera houses. These experiments were conducted with the Toulon Opera Chorus, directed by C. Bernollin. The opera chorus masters involved were: E. Trenque from the Marseille Opera, G. Magnanini from the Nice Opera, and Karine Locatelli, chorus master of the Lyon Opera. The experimental test, conducted in situ and in vivo, took place in the Toulon Opera's rehearsal room and was filmed and recorded to collect data. This artistic experiment is innovative in light of the existing scientific literature on choral conducting. Preliminary tests at the experimental site were essential for this innovative approach. For all video recording equipment, we employed a director of photography, who was also responsible for synchronization in post-production.The entire project, named DAAIS (Audiovisual Device for the Analysis of Interactions in Situation), was initiated as part of a thesis project at the PRISM laboratory, with development and funding aligned with the doctoral research period, starting in 2022. Supported by InCIAM and the Ministry of Culture, it involves collaborations with directors, musicologists and technical experts ... |
